KGF-2 / FGF-7

Keratinocyte Growth Factor

The scalp-specific growth factor for shaft thickness

Overview

Keratinocyte Growth Factor 2 (also known as FGF-7) acts selectively on epithelial cells, making it one of the more targeted peptides for hair. It stimulates keratinocyte proliferation in the outer root sheath, thickens the hair shaft, and has been shown to reduce shedding during the telogen-to-anagen transition.

Mechanism of Action

Binds FGFR2b (a keratinocyte-specific receptor) and activates ERK1/2 and STAT3 signaling. Uniquely, KGF-2 does not stimulate fibroblasts or dermal cells — its action is purely epithelial, making it precise for follicle targeting.

Pathway

FGFR2b → ERK1/2 + STAT3 in keratinocytes

Key Benefits

Thickens existing hair shafts
Reduces telogen effluvium shedding
Keratinocyte-specific — minimal systemic effects
Improves scalp skin texture and barrier
Useful during transition periods (after chemotherapy, postpartum)
